Scope Of Online Tutoring Over The Next 5 Years

India is among the top three countries in the world after China and the USA to get the most venture capital funding in the edtech sector

A report by Technavio, a global market research firm, the online tutoring services market in India is set to grow by $14.76 bn from 2020 to 2025, progressing at a CAGR of 15.96 per cent during the forecast period. Accelerated by the increasing number of smartphone users and the shift to digital-learning models, the edtech industry in India is expected to grow exponentially in the years to come. The sector was already witnessing huge traction and with the Covid-pandemic led lockdown, the edtech industry actually picked up like never before.

These growth trends are definitely determined owing to a few factors:

1. Low cost of online education

In comparison to traditional schooling, online education is more affordable. Varied edtech platforms are available for students where they can receive a quality education at optimized costs. Due to the affordability, students from different income categories receive access to engaging content, impressive visuals and well-versed teachers.

2. Government’s initiative to boost e-learning

The Government of India has launched the Swayam Program and Diksha to promote online learning in the country. Owing to the restrictions implemented due to lockdown, the Indian government has been encouraging educational institutions to inculcate imparting education using online methods for uninterrupted learning. These initiatives have also led to widening the scope of online education and tutoring.

3. Expanding internet userbase

As of February 2021, there are more than 624 million active internet users in India. These users offer an enormous growth opportunity for the edtech stakeholders. Edtech platforms will particularly work well in tier 3 and 4 cities where affordability is a major concern for many students. With more people in the target audience, every segment of the edtech industry has multifarious opportunities for growth.

4. Increased flexibility and customisation

In physical classrooms, there’s a limitation to the regional population of the students but if we talk about digital classrooms, faculties will be able to address not just the local population but also students who may not be located at the place of teaching. Even in terms of faculty, we will not be confined and will be able to hire an expert professionals from anywhere around the world.

Adding to this, students can schedule classes at their convenience which allows them more control over their schedules. Edtech platforms also allow students to pace their learning by selecting the topics that they want to study. This flexibility is a big attraction for both tutors and students.

5. Working parents

India is witnessing a shift in the structure of families. Most families today are nuclear where parents are professionally engaged. The lockdown and the anxiety about children’s education have been major factors among parents after the schools closed down. In the midst of managing their professional duties and household chores, most parents also had the added duty of attending to bored children who were confined to their homes, with no studies or friends. Virtual classrooms helped not only keep children occupied and continue their education but also allowed parents to participate in their learning and development.

K12, higher education, test preparation, and upskilling are expected to drive the growth of the edtech industry in India. Even though the edtech sector is seeing massive growth in users, the sector still faces infrastructure limitations due to poor connectivity and low-end devices. In order to increase the adoption of edtech, stakeholders must ensure that edtech is affordable. In the coming future, online education is going to be a part of every person’s life and we need to be prepared for the changes. It’s not just an option anymore but a need. With the help of new technologies, the government needs to reach out to every village and provide them with the necessities to adopt online tutoring.
